Whoa, that's cool!
Through my years of studying voice, I have been blessed with incredible teachers (among them are Dm. Ewan Harbrecht Mitton, Dr. Myra Brand, and the late Brian Swingle). These amazing teachers, and others through my career, have taught me a lot of vocal pedagogy...the structure and function of the voice. I love the science and scope of it, but for some this "how" can get in the way of the "why". So, tread lightly, lest your brain explodeth!
I love to educate my students, and thankfully, we have such amazing tools in the internet! I found this video the other day and want to share it with you. It's #amazeballz!
Here in my studio we do a lot of "cross training". Building on a Bel Canto foundation of beautiful singing, many of my singers go into the various levels and studies of different genres. In this video, he will show how the different genres affect the mechanics of the voice. Watch how the tongue, soft palate, larynx and jaw all move to make different sounds. Additionally, pay close attention to where the air flow goes, even up into the nasopharynx and sinuses. Resonance in action!
Write any questions you may have and bring them with you to your lessons!

Each year, for our Northern Utah chapter, professional voice teachers enter approximately 300 singers in our National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions.
This audition process is for students in every age category:

* Advanced 1 (up to age 24, voice major)

Students are judged within their own age/gender category, and within two divisions: Classical and Musical Theatre. The winners of each category win a small monetary award, and appear in the Honors Concert for their division. Which brings me round, why I am writing to you today:
This year Barrow Music Studio is proud to have entered six students into the event.
All did very well, and we are so thrilled and grateful for their judges comments and scores.
A special shout out to our two students who scored high enough to win and place in their events!
Staley Binks - 1st place, Musical Theatre Male, High School 1
Staley Binks - 1st place, Classical Division, High School 1
Lexi Parry - 2nd place, Classical Division, Jr. High Category
The winners of each division will be singing at the honors concerts, and everyone is invited to attend!
Our own Staley Binks will be performing at both concerts, and we hope you and your student/parent will come hear him and all the vocalists who will be performing.
If you are interested in participating in this event next year, please tell me right away. HS and older require foreign language for classical, and up to three songs for adults Musical Theatre. We have a lot of work ahead :).
